Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility

As a technology provider, development partner, corporate citizen and employer, we strive to stay one step ahead. Looking ahead informs our role in the community and the wider world, so we integrate CSR into every aspect of our business.

We’re committed to managing our business responsibly and acting in the best interests of our employees, customers, suppliers, communities and the environment at the forefront of our strategies and goals.

We structure our responsible and sustainable business initiatives into four themes:

  • Community
  • Environment
  • Workplace
  • Marketplace

TRL strives to be a responsible neighbour. We support local and industry related charitable causes and sponsor local organisations in our community.
We also ensure we use nearby suppliers where possible to support local businesses. Some of our community initiatives last year included:

  • Charity of choice
  • Defibrillators donated to Tewkesbury Town Colts and Tewkesbury Bowling Club
  • Sponsorship of the 2014 Tewkesbury Christmas Lights
  • Furniture donation to teachers at Gorsley Goffs Primary School, Ross-on-Wye
  • Stationery donation to Milestone School, Gloucester
  • £1000 in donations as a result of employee fundraising for charities including: Sue Ryder, Help for Heroes, Cotswold Down Syndrome Group and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research

We have strong relationships with key universities and educational establishments, particularly supporting our field of expertise - engineering. Some TRL educational initiatives last year included:

  • Supporting the Engineering in Education scheme for Tewkesbury School
  • Donation of £25,000 of laboratory equipment to Aston Institute of Photonic Technology
  • Supporting the RIAT Schools Engineering Challenge, mentoring pupils from Malmesbury School

TRL is committed to protecting the environment for future generations and has set targets and objectives to reduce the environmental impact of our business and products during their lifetime.

Environmental initiatives include:

  • Accreditations and management systems in place including ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System, and OHASA 18001 – Health & Safety Management System.
  • We actively encourage employees to recycle and have a target of 0% waste to landfill by 2017.
  • Environmental impact is always a top priority in new product development when selecting raw materials and designing packaging and we have a target that 80% of products will be 100% recyclable by 2020.
  • The use of hazardous materials in the L3 product portfolio is compliant for all markets.
  • By taking positive steps to conserve natural resources with renewable electricity sources at all TRL sites, we’re helping reduce our carbon footprint.
  • We actively encourage video conferencing and promote car sharing and cycle to work schemes to reduce our carbon emissions from fuel for travel.
  • We aim to minimise the disturbance to the local and global environment and to the quality of life in the local community.

Charity of Choice

Each year we invite all employees across the business to nominate a ‘Charity of Choice’ for the year and a company-wide vote takes place to decide on the chosen charity for that year. Employees organise various events to raise as much money as possible for the cause. The company then matches every penny raised at the end of the year, increasing the total amount we donate.

Industrial Batteries Return Scheme

As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we produce Lithium Ion batteries. We are obliged to take back free of charge, waste industrial batteries supplied to end users for treatment and recycling. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new industrial batteries on the market. If any of our customers or in certain cases other end users, require us to take back Industrial batteries, please contact us using the information below and we will agree the necessary arrangements for the return, proper treatment and recycling of the waste industrial batteries.

TRL believes in treating people fairly and consistently, encouraging openness, supportiveness and respectfulness in the workplace.

We know our greatest asset is our people, and we create a climate and culture that encourages them to deliver outstanding performance for our customers, for us and for themselves, with our company values shaping the way we behave:

  • Acting with Integrity
  • Delivering Excellence
  • Working in Partnership
  • Respecting People
  • Focussed on the Future

We value the contribution and ideas that spring from people with a range of views and opinions, which is why we have the TRL Employee Forum with representatives from across the company coming together to help improve communication and openly discuss and resolve any issues.

In 2014 we were awarded the Investors in People Bronze Accreditation in recognition of the extra commitment the company has made to developing its people; an accolade we are extremely proud of. This reinforces TRL are at the leading edge of best practice in people management and strengthens our commitment to employee development, recognition and satisfaction which is fundamental to our competitive advantage and growth.

We are committed to continuous Ethics training for all employees and work within the ethical guidelines as specified in the L3 Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.

Fairness in the way we do business is imperative and is at the heart of our values and culture.

We work strictly within the legal and ethical regulations for the UK, US, and each of the countries we conduct business in, and ensure all employees complete appropriate ethics training modules.

The company is compliant with the FCPA, UK Anti-bribery act and country specific regulations and laws.

TRL has a team of Export specialists ensuring we always comply with UK export regulations and appropriate local customs and regulations including the UK Export Control Act 2002, EU, UN, Trade Sanctions or embargoes, as well as the L3Harris Code of Conduct. We carry out Dun and Bradstreet checks and visual compliance checks.

It’s important for us to build long-term relationships with our suppliers and provide support for small, local, specialist producers, manufactures and services, where possible within a 10 mile radius of our sites.
